Guild Wars 2 Guide to Fighting Mesmer in PvP

Mesmers are one of the most elusive and deceptive professions in Guild Wars 2. They can create illusions, clones, and phantasms to confuse and damage their enemies. They can also shatter their illusions for various effects, such as damaging, confusing, or stunning foes. They can also use stealth, blinks, portals, and other tricks to escape or reposition themselves. Mesmers wear light armor and can use a variety of weapons, such as scepters, swords, pistols, greatswords, and staffs. Mesmers can also specialize in different elite specializations, such as chronomancer, mirage, or virtuoso. Fighting a Mesmer can be challenging, but not impossible. In this guide, we will share some tips and tricks on how to deal with these magical duelists in PvP.

How to Identify the Real Mesmer?

One of the first steps to fighting a Mesmer is to identify the real one among their illusions. Clones are perfect copies of the Mesmer that have less health, buffs, and movement than the real ones. They only use the basic attack chain and are relatively fragile. Phantasms are semi-transparent ethereal creations that deal more damage and have special effects. They usually have a purple glow and wield different weapons than the Mesmer. They disappear after performing their special attack and leave a clone behind.

There are some ways to tell the real Mesmer apart from their illusions:

  • Look for a bouncing arrow above their head or their nameplate. These are indicators that only the real Mesmer has.

  • Look for the number of buffs they have. The real Mesmer will have more buffs than their illusions, such as food, signets, or boons.

  • Look for their movement patterns. The real Mesmer will move more often and use sidestepping or strafing, while clones will run straight forward and turn according to their target.

  • Look for their skill usage. The real Mesmer will use more skills than their illusions, such as weapon skills, utility skills, or elite skills.

Avoiding or Mitigating Shatters

Shatters are instant attacks that Mesmers can use to destroy their illusions and cause various effects on their enemies. There are four types of shatters:

  • Mind Wrack: Damages nearby foes based on the number of illusions shattered.

  • Cry of Frustration: Confuses nearby foes based on the number of illusions shattered.

  • Diversion: Dazes nearby foes based on the number of illusions shattered.

  • Distortion: Grants invulnerability to the Mesmer based on the number of illusions shattered.

Shatters are one of the main sources of damage and pressure for Mesmers, so avoiding or mitigating them is crucial. There are some ways to do that:

  • Dodge or use defensive skills when you see the Mesmer or their illusions shatter. Shatters have a distinctive sound and animation that can alert you to their usage.

  • Do use reflects or blocks to negate the damage or effects of shatters. Some shatters are projectiles that can be reflected or blocked by skills such as Feedback or Shield Stance.

  • Use stability or resistance to prevent the daze or confusion from shattering. Some shatters are crowd control effects that can be prevented by boons such as stability or resistance.

  • Use cleanses or heals to remove the confusion or damage from shatters. Some shatters are conditions that can be removed by skills such as Null Field or Healing Signet.

Use AoE Damage and Pressure

Now, another effective way to deal with a Mesmer is using the AoE damage and pressure so that you can hit both them and their illusions. The outcome would be a reduction of their shatter potential and they would have to use their defensive skills. This will result in a big advantage for you. Now you must be wondering how to do it. Well, there are some ways to do that:

  • To hit everyone, you need skills like a meteor shower, firestorm, etc. that can cover large areas. It is the only way you can hit everyone at once and deal amazing damage.

  • It would be a good idea to use cleave hits for this as well. Skills such as Hundred Blades, Whirling Wrath, etc. can hit multiple enemies in a cone shape and deal good damage for you.

  • Burst skills can also come in handy when you want to do big damage and are running short of time. Skills such as Backstab, Maul, etc. can also deal high damage and even help you finish them off quickly if you don’t want the fight to drag on for long.

Be Aggressive and Focus on Phantasms

You would need some aggression in order to succeed here. Of course, you don’t want to lose focus in the process as you need to kill their phantasms. Well, for those who don’t know, phantasms are also illusions but a lot stronger ones that will deal a lot more damage to you and on top of that have special effects as well. They usually have a purple glow and wield different weapons than the Mesmer. They disappear after performing their special attack and leave a clone behind. So focusing on them first would be a good strategy.

Phantasms are one of the main sources of damage and pressure for Mesmers, so killing them is important. There are some ways to do that:

  • Look for the weapon type and the purple glow of the phantasms. Different phantasms have different weapons and effects, such as pistols, swords, torches, or shields. They also have a purple glow that distinguishes them from clones and the real Mesmer.

  • Use single-target skills that deal high damage or CC to the phantasms. Skills such as Kill Shot, Headshot, or Skull Crack can deal high damage or CC to a single target and disable their special attack.

  • Use focus skills that prioritize the phantasms. Skills such as Arcane Thievery, Smite Condition, and many more can affect the phantasms more than the clones or the real Mesmer, depending on their effects so be wary of that as well.

Don't Let the Mesmer Free Cast on You

Another way to fight a Mesmer is to not let them free cast on you. Mesmers can use stealth, blinks, portals, and other tricks to escape or reposition themselves. They can also use skills that interrupt, distort or evade your attacks. If you let them free cast on you, they will have an advantage and be able to set up their combos and shatters.

There are some ways to prevent them from free casting on you:

  • Use reveal skills that expose them when they are in stealth. Skills such as Revealed Training, Hunter's Shot, or Scorpion Wire can reveal enemies in stealth and prevent them from using stealth skills.

  • Use gap-closers or mobility skills that follow them when they blink or portal. Skills such as Heartseeker, Savage Leap or Ride the Lightning can close the distance between you and them and prevent them from escaping or repositioning.

  • A good strategy would be to use interrupt skills to stop them from using their skills entirely. If you are able to prevent their skills, you will have a big advantage in this case. Skills such as Dazing Strike, Counterblow, etc. can be used effectively here.

Conclusion

Fighting a Mesmer in Guild Wars 2 can be challenging, but not impossible. By following these tips and tricks, you can improve your chances of winning against these magical duelists. Remember to identify the real Mesmer, avoid or mitigate shatters, use AoE damage and pressure, be aggressive and focus on phantasms, and don't let the Mesmer free cast on you.
